India lost to Ireland by 34 runs after failing to chase 183-run target.
Shreyas Iyer commenced his stint as Indian T20I captain in the 1st T20I against Ireland on Friday, June 26. However, his first assignment did not go well as India suffered a poor defeat in the clash.
Notably, India had never lost a T20I against Ireland ahead of the match. They crushed Ireland in all the 8 T20I games in the past. However, Ireland scripted history by outplaying India, which came as a big humiliation for the Men in Blue, who are the T20 World Cup 2026 winners.
In IRE vs IND T20I, Shreyas won the toss and opted to bowl first in the encounter. Ireland lost their top three batters Tim Tector, Ross Adair, and Harry Tector, cheaply. However, captain Lorcan Tucker (50) took the onus of the batting on himself and hammered a half-century. Later, Gareth Delany also hammered 49 runs to take the scoreboard to 182/9 in the first innings.
Harshit Rana, who made his comeback, picked a three-wicket haul in the clash, while Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel took two wickets each. Losing Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, and Shreyas Iyer for single digits, India had a poor start to their innings Opener Abhishek Sharma (50) gave a brilliant start to India’s batting; however, lost his wicket just after his half-century.
Key batters like Tilak Varma, Washington Sundar, and Shivam Dube failed to provide good support in the chase. India were eventually bowled out for 148 runs, losing by 34 runs.
Matthew Humphreys and Matthew Hollard clinched three-wicket each for Ireland to give big setback to the visitors.
