Indian ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer’s injury has turned out to be much worse than expected. As per the reports in PTI, it is learned that the batter has been shifted to the ICU after the internal bleeding was detected in his rib-cage area.
Shreyas Iyer, who was part of the Indian squad for the ODI series against Australia, got injured during the third match of the series. He attempted to take the catch of Alex Carey as he ran backwards to gobble a sensational diving catch.
He looked in immense pain as soon as he fell on the ground. The batter was then taken to the hospital immediately after that and underwent scans there. However, two days later, the reports of internal bleeding hogged the headlines.
After the reports came in, internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately – Source close to BCCI on Shreyas Iyer
A source close to BCCI confirmed the same, saying: “Shreyas has been in ICU for the past couple of days. After the reports came in, internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately.
“He will remain under observation for anywhere between two to seven days depending on recovery, as one needs to stop the spread of infection due to bleeding.”
The source mentioned that Iyer’s parameters fluctuated upon his return to the dressing room and the BCCI’s medical team immediately took him to the hospital. Although, things are stable now, the injury could have been fatal. He added:
“The team doctor and physio didn’t take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He’s a tough lad and should be fine soon.”
The source also shared his take on Iyer’s return to cricket, saying that he will need time to recover.
“Since there has been internal bleeding, he will certainly need more time to recover, and at this point, it’s difficult to put a definite timeline on his return to competitive cricket,” the source said.
The reports added that Shreyas Iyer will be there in Sydney hospital for at least a week. Only after he is declared fit, will he be allowed to travel back home. Another section of the reports also claimed that the BCCI is arranging visas for his family so that they can meet him.
