ENG vs IND: Shubman Gill becomes ninth Indian batter to score 300+ test runs in a match

Shubman Gill scored 269 runs in the first innings of the Edgbaston test.

The Indian Cricket Team and the England Cricket Team are facing off each other in the second test of the five-match series at Edgbaston, Birmingham. During the match, Shubman Gill achieved a massive feat as he became the ninth Indian batsman to score 300+ runs in a test match.

In the first innings, the Indian skipper smacked a stunning double century. With 30 fours and three sixes, he scored 269 runs off 387 deliveries. With his brilliant knock, India piled up a mammoth total of 587/10 in the first innings.

Later, Gill returned with a half-century in the second innings, becoming the ninth Indian batsman to smash more than 300 runs in a test match. Gill joined the likes of former batting legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, and Virender Sehwag for the record.

Former India captain Gavaskar was the first Indian player to score 300+ runs in a test match in 1971, during an encounter against the West Indies. Virender Sehwag is the only Indian player to achieve this feat twice in tests. Below is the list of Indian players with 300+ runs in a test match.

Notably, Gill also broke Virat Kohli’s record for the highest test knock by an Indian captain in tests. The right-handed batsman also registered the top test knock by an Indian player in England.

Talking about the Edgbaston test, India has taken a lead of over 400-plus runs in the second innings. KL Rahul, Pant slammed half-centuries apart from Gill on day 4. England lead the series 1-0 after winning the opening game by five wickets.
