Disappointed after World Cup final loss, Shubman Gill now aims at T20 World Cup next year
Shubman Gill scored 354 runs in the recently concluded ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
Indian opening batter Shubman Gill has been a revelation for team India this year. He made a great leap in his career in 2023. He has been scoring heavily in each format of the game and also had a wonderful ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. Gill scored 354 runs in nine games, with four fifty-plus scores in the tournament. He is currently the leading run-scorer in ODI format for India in 2023 and has scored 1584 runs in 29 ODI games with five big centuries.
Team India recently had a disappointing end to their fabulous campaign in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and lost the big finals against Australia at Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad. India missed out on the ICC title once again after a six-wicket match against Australia in the finals. Despite all the success this year, Shubman Gill is a bit disappointed with the kind of ending team India had in the mega event. Gill also had a disappointing game in the finals.
‘World Cup loss dampens the mood,’ says Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill is now aiming for the next and upcoming T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA. While talking to CNBC TV18, Gill said, “I think it’s been a great year for me, but having to miss out on the World Cup obviously dampened the mood a bit, but fortunately we have another World Cup coming up next year, so we are all looking forward to it.” India have been empty-handed in ICC events for the last 10 years and has lost five ICC finals across formats.
Shubman Gill also added that he is looking forward to the upcoming big tournaments next year. He said, “In the next year, there is the World Cup coming, a very important Test series coming up in Australia, and I think this year is not over yet; we have the Test Series coming up in South Africa as well. I think the Test Series in Australia and South Africa are going to be really big ones, and those are the matches I am really looking forward to.”
After Hardik Pandya’s departure, opener Shubman Gill has been appointed the new skipper of Gujarat Titans. Hardik Pandya was traded to Mumbai Indians just a week ago, and Gill will have an opportunity to lead the team in Indian Premier League. Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan will be his deputy. India will be on a one-month-long tour of South Africa. The first T20I against South Africa will begin at Kingmead in Durban.
