Shubman Gill sustained a neck injury on day 2 of the first IND vs SA test.

South Africa Cricket Team handed a shocking defeat to Indian Cricket Team in the first test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata by 30 runs, where the hosts failed to chase down a mere 124-run target. Apart from India’s humiliating batting collapse and tricky Eden Gardens pitch, Shubman Gill’s injury hogged the headlines as it costed the hosts big time.

As he hit a boundary off Simon Harmer’s delivery, in the first innings on day two, the Indian test captain sustained a neck injury. He could only face three deliveries before experiencing severe pain, due to which he was unable to move his neck and left the field immediately with the team physio.

Later, he got retired out in the first innings, where India were bowled out for 189 runs. Ahead of day 3 of the match, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed that Gill was ruled out of the Kolkata test and will not bat in the second innings. Vice-captain Rishabh Pant took charge of the side in his absence.

The 26-year-old was discharged from the hospital on Sunday (November 16), however, he is highly likely to miss the second game against South Africa. A video of Gill getting discharged from the hospital with a cervical collar on his neck is doing the rounds on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

Meanwhile, reports from ESPN Cricinfo have suggested that Gill will not be able to take part in India’s training session in Kolkata on Tuesday. Due to the injury, he is unlikely to travel with the squad to Guwahati on Wednesday, as commercial flight travel is not recommended for people having pain in the neck.

In such a scenario, Gill is unlikely to play in the second test against South Africa, which will commence on November 22 (Saturday) at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. However, an official confirmation from BCCI is awaited. If Gill is unavailable for the next game, vice-captain Pant will lead India, where they will aim to make a comeback following a humiliating defeat in the first test.
