Shubman Gill fined by ICC for criticising Cameron Green's catch on social media
Shubman Gill had a poor outing in the ICC World Test Championship Final against Australia.
Indian opener Shubman Gill is fined 15% of his match fees for his tweet showing discontent over the umpiring decision. Along with Shubman Gill, the Indian team are also fined 100% of their match fees due to team's slow over-rate. Including this, Gill’s total fine accounted for 115% of his match fees.
Australia are also fined 80% of their match fees due to slow over-rate. Shubman Gill had a disappointing 2nd inning when he was given out by third umpire Richard Kettleborough on 18 in 19 balls. Cameron Green took a diving catch to his left in the third slip which was a controversial take and the umpire had to look at multiple replays before adjudging Gill out.
Right after the end of day 4, Indian opener Shubman Gill tweeted a picture with a few emojis. Gill tweeted a picture where Green was about to take the catch and it showed the ball touching the ground. With this Gill showcased his displeasure on Richard Kettleborough's decision of ruling him out.
ICC charged him for breaching the 2.7 ICC code of conduct which relates to, “public criticism or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match”. ICC found Gill’s tweet as a breach of the ICC code of conduct. Indian captain Rohit Sharma also showed his displeasure over the decision and had a chat with on-field umpires right after the decision.
Shubman Gill had a tough outing in the World Test Championship Final against Australia. In both the innings, Gill could not score many runs and was out early. Gill in the first innings scored 13 runs before getting out to Scott Boland. Gill had a brain fade moment in the first innings and offered no shot against one of Boland’s deliveries. Indian fans had huge expectations from him as he smashed 3 centuries in the recently concluded Indian Premier League.
