Shubman Gill sustained a neck injury during the first IND vs SA test at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Indian Cricket Team captain Shubman Gill is looking positive to play in the second test against South Africa Cricket Team, scheduled to start on November 22 (Saturday) at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. According to a latest report by PTI, Gill will undergo a fitness test just ahead of the clash on Friday, November 21.

The report also revealed that the Indian captain has travelled with the squad to Guwahati, but didn’t attend the practice session on Thursday. Gill is recovering from a neck injury he sustained during the first test at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens.

On day 2 of the match, Gill sustained a spasm in his neck while hitting a boundary off spinner Simon Harmer’s over in the first innings. After facing just three deliveries, he could not continue his batting and immediately left the field with the team physio. He was seen in immense pain and did not return to bat. Later, he was sent to a hospital in Kolkata for treatment.

Ahead of day three’s play, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that Gill has been ruled out of the game and will not bat in the second innings. Following a successful treatment, he was seen leaving the hospital with a cervical collar on his neck.

Ahead of the second game, the BCCI announced that Gill was responding well to the treatment and will travel to Guwahati with the team on November 19 and is under observation with the medical team.

“Shubman has been responding well to the medical treatment provided and will travel to Guwahati with the team on 19th November, 2025. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team and a decision on his participation in the 2nd Test will be taken accordingly,” BCCI had informed in a statement.

Meanwhile, if Gill is not able to feature in the second test, vice-captain Rishabh Pant will captain the team in his absence. He also captained the side in the first test after Gill was ruled out, where India faced a horrible defeat, losing by 30 runs.

With one batter less in Shubman Gill, the hosts failed to chase a 124-run target in the clash, with Harmer clinching a fabulous four-wicket haul in the second innings. With a total of eight wickets, Harmer was adjudged Player of the Match.
