The upcoming England tour will be Shubman Gill’s first tour as the test captain of the Indian Cricket Team.
The newly appointed Indian Test captain, Shubman Gill, might not feature in the second warm-up game of India A against England Lions. According to Indian Express reports, it is learned that the team management has decided to rest him ahead of the five-match test series against England.
Ahead of the main test series between India and England, the A team will be locking horns with the Lions in the two-match series. The first match will take place from May 30 to June 2 and will be followed by the second game from June 6 to 9. After that, A team will play the main Indian team as well ahead of the first game against the Ben Stokes-led side.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the squad for the A side. Accordingly, Shubman Gill was selected to play the second match so that he can get used to the conditions ahead of the main series, which begins on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds.
Shubman Gill has been asked to take rest
However, Shubman Gill won’t be featuring in that game now. The right-hander is currently leading the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The franchise has reached the playoffs and might even play the final on June 3.
If Shubman Gill’s team qualifies for the final, then it could be a scramble to reach England in two days. Hence, the batter has been asked to take the rest so that he stays fit for the entire five-match test series against England. The batter is now likely to travel to the UK with the rest of the team on 6th May.
The upcoming England tour will be the first assignment for Shubman Gill as the test captain of the Indian Cricket Team. The youngster was recently named as the new skipper following the retirement of Rohit Sharma. Along with him, Rishabh Pant was announced as the vice-captain of the team.
Shubman Gill will have a massive point to prove in England both as a batter as well as the leader. Since his 91-run innings against Australia at Brisbane, Gabba, he has failed to score a half-century in foreign conditions, due to which he is also criticized.
Shubman Gill would be keen to set the stage on fire and help his team win. The test series between England and India will also mark the start of a new edition of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle.
