Shubman Gill trained hard to played the against Sikkim in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26, but missed the clash.
Shubman Gill, the Indian Test and ODI skipper, was unavailable for the match against Sikkim in Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26, which took place at the Jaipuria Vidyalaya Ground, Jaipur on Saturday, January 3.
Opting to field, Punjab were off to a flying start with the ball with pacer Arshdeep Singh taking a fifer. While, they have been spot on the field, one thing has been bothering fans as to why Shubman Gill missed the game against Sikkim in Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26.
Gill was expected to play the clash as he trained hard, but on the morning of the match, he was ruled out. As per the reports in RevSportz, Gill is not playing the game against Sikkim due to food poisoning. His absence has left the fans confused about his recent future with the Indian team.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be announcing India’s ODI squad for the home series against New Zealand on Saturday or Sunday. Meanwhile, him being down with food poisoning means that he might miss the ODI series against New Zealand, starting from January 11.
Shubman Gill having a tough time as India’s Test and ODI skipper

Gill has had a tough time as India’s Test and ODI skipper in recent times. He missed the Test series against South Africa due to a neck injury that kept him out ODIs as well. India lost both the Test matches as the Proteas whitewashed India at home but won the 50-over series by 2-1.
Gill also lost the ODI series against Australia, adding more pressure to his captaincy. Now, with him picking up food poisoning, the Indian white-ball skipper is running a race against time to get fully fit for the ODI series against the Kiwis at home.
He did not do very well in the T20Is against South Africa, which was his last assignment for India. Eventually, he lost his opening slot to Sanju Samson in the fifth T20I and was dropped from India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad as well.
Meanwhile, now that he is not playing for Punjab in the game against Sikkim, he is expected to return for Punjab’s next game against Goa on January 6.
