Shubman Gill slammed 147 runs in the first innings of Headingley test.

The India Cricket Team and the England Cricket Team are clashing with each other in the first test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 at Headingley, Leeds. Indian skipper Shubman Gill made a magnificent start to his test captaincy stint by smacking a century in the first innings of the game.

Shubman Gill, who took the number four batting slot in the encounter, arrived at the crease when the team was reeling at 92/2. He etched two crucial partnerships – a 129-run stand with Yashasvi Jaiswal for the third wicket and a 209-run stand with Rishabh Pant for the fourth wicket.

The right-handed batsman slammed 147 runs off 227 deliveries in the first innings, hitting 19 boundaries and one six in the process. He was dismissed by spinner Shoaib Bashir as he tried to hit a six to reach 150 runs. However, he was caught by Josh Tongue at deep square leg. Gill registered his sixth century in the longest format of the game and his first-ever in England.

Notably, the Indian test captain has broken multiple records after his brilliant batting show in the encounter. To begin with, he became the fifth Indian captain to score a ton on test captaincy debut, joining the legends in Vijay Hazare, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Sunil Gavaskar.

Below is the list of records achieved by Gill in the Headingley test.

1. Fifth youngest Indian captain in test cricket

When Shubman Gill walked out for the toss on day 1, he became the fifth-youngest Indian to lead the nation in test cricket. He captained India for the first time at the age of 25 years and 285 days. The youngest Indian test captain is Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, who led India at the age of 21 years and 77 days for the first time. He made his test captaincy debut in March 1962 against the West Indies.

2. Fifth Indian batter to hit a hundred on test captaincy debut

With his 147 in the innings, Shubman Gill became fifth Indian batter to hit a hundred on test captaincy debut. He joined the likes of Vijay Hazare (1951 vs ENG), Sunil Gavaskar (1976 vs NZ), Dilip Vengsarkar (1987 vs WI) and Virat Kohli (2014 vs AUS ) in the elite list. Kohli remains the only Indian batter to hit twin-centuries on test captaincy debut.

3. Completed 2000 runs in test cricket

Prior to the Headingley test, Shubman Gill had 1893 test runs to his name and was 107 runs short of reaching the 2000-run mark in the longest format of the game. With his 147 in the game, he crossed the milestone. He became 43rd Indian cricketer to amass over 2000 runs in test cricket.

4. Registered his highest individual score in test cricket

Shubman Gill’s 147 in the game is also his highest score in test cricket now. His previous best score in test cricket was 128, which he achieved against Australia in Ahmedabad, during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023.

Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal (101) and Rishabh Pant (134) also hammered centuries in the first innings of the first ENG vs IND test. But, in the end, India had a terrible collapse as from 430/3 they got all out for 471, losing the last seven wickets for just 41 runs.

However, debutant Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair got out for ducks in the encounter. For England, skipper Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue grabbed four-wicket hauls each. Brydon Carse and Shoaib Bashir hunted one wicket each.
