Shubman Gill finished as the highest run-scorer in the ENG vs IND test series with 754 runs.
After India defeated England by six runs in The Oval test, Indian skipper Shubman Gill said that the visitors wanted to put pressure on England on day 5. England needed 35 runs for victory on final day of the fifth test. However, they had only four wickets left.
India piled up 224/10 in the first innings of The Oval test after being asked to bat first. Later, they bowled out England for 247 runs, with four wickets each by Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna.
In the second innings, Yashasvi Jaiswal (118) powered India to 396/10 with his century. England had to chase 374 runs in the second innings, however, Mohammed Siraj captured a five-haul to halt England at 367/10 to drive India to victory.

We wanted them to feel pressure throughout 35 runs: Shubman Gill
Speaking during the post-match presentation, Shubman Gill said that they were confident of winning the encounter on day 5 and wanted to put England under pressure during the final moments. He also lauded Siraj for his bowling show in the match.
“We were confident. We wanted them to feel the pressure throughout the 35 runs they scored. He (Mohammed Siraj) is a captain’s dream, every ball, every spell he bowled, he came all out and gave it everything for the team. Both teams coming into Day 5 not knowing who would win shows how passionate both teams were and how hard everyone has played,” he said.
“Both the teams came up with their A game, happy to get on the right side today. When you have bowlers like Siraj and Prasidh, captaincy seems easy. They were making the ball talk. Yes, there was a bit of pressure on us, but they were really bowling well,” said Gill.
Notably, Shubman Gill and Harry Brook won Player of the Series awards for their marvellous show with the bat. Gill revealed that he had set a goal to be the best batter of the series and was happy to achieve it in the end.
“Feels very rewarding, there were certain things I wanted to work on as a batter and it was a goal to end as the best batter of this series, glad to get that goal. It is always a combination of technique and mentality, when you are feeling good mentally then the technique naturally flows,” Gill further said.
Meanwhile, Gill finished as the highest run-scorer of the series with 754 runs. Smashing four centuries including a double century, the Indian skipper broke plenty of batting records in the series. Siraj ended the leading wicket-taker with 23 scalps.
England made a winning start to the series with a victory in the first test at Headingley by five wickets. India won the second test at Edgbaston by 336 runs. The hosts then crushed India by 22 runs in the third test at The Lord’s, while the fourth game ended in a draw.
