Shubman Gill suffered a severe neck injury during the first IND vs SA test in Kolkata.

In what will act as a big blow for the Indian Cricket Team. Captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the ODI series against the South Africa Cricket Team. As per the reports in PTI, the right-hander is also doubtful for the five-match T20I series following the three-match ODI series.

Shubman Gill’s neck injury kept him out of the ongoing second test against South Africa, which is underway at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. The Indian test and ODI captain suffered a neck issue during the first test in Kolkata following which he was admitted to the hospital.

Gill travelled to Guwahati in the hope of playing the second test but was deemed unfit to take part in it. He was then taken to Mumbai, where he met Dr Abhay Nene, a renowned spine specialist. Following the assessment, the reports have been sent to chief selector Ajit Agarkar for further evaluation.

A source close to development confirmed that tests are being done to see if Gill has faced a muscular injury or a nerve-related niggle. He said that although selectors are hopeful for him getting fit for South Africa T20Is, there is every chance that he could miss five T20Is as well. Speaking to PTI, he said:

“All tests are being done to ascertain whether it is a muscular injury or a nerve-related niggle that requires more rest. As of now, selectors will be hoping he gets fit for the South Africa T20Is.”

“Gill has been given an injection to alleviate his symptoms and will need a period of rest before starting rehab, training and skill work. There is every chance he could also be doubtful for the T20I series.”

In his absence in ODIs, selectors are looking at Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul as possible options to lead India in the series. Since Shreyas Iyer, who suffered a rib injury in Australia, will also miss the series, they are looking at the captaincy option with Axar Patel also in the race.
