Shubman Gill has been appointed as India’s new test skipper by BCCI.

Indian cricketer Shubman Gill has been appointed as the new test skipper of the Indian Cricket Team. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the India squad for the England test series on Saturday, May 24. Apart from naming Gill as the new skipper, the governing body also picked Rishabh Pant as the new vice-captain for tests.

Gill will be succeeding Rohit Sharma, who announced his retirement from tests earlier this month. The senior batter took charge of the test team in February 2022. Gill will commence his stint with the upcoming series against England, which starts next month.

Team India will face England in five tests during the away tour. The 1st test will begin on June 20 at Headingley in Leeds. The final test match will be played at Kennington Oval in London from July 31 to August 4. It will be the first test series in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle.

Hence, Gill has a big challenge ahead in his debut test series as a captain as Ben Stokes-led England are known to be dominant on their home soil. Also, India has never won a test series in England since 2007. After becoming the test skipper, Gill said it’s a great honour to become the test skipper.

“It is definitely a bit overwhelming. As a young kid, when anyone starts playing cricket, they want to play for India and not just play for India, but play test cricket for India for a very long time. To be able to get this opportunity is a great honor. And like you said, it’s a big responsibility. I’m looking forward for this exciting opportunity” the right-handed batsman said.

He also said that the England series will be an exciting one.

“And I think the series, the upcoming series in England is going to be a very exciting one. I believe in leading by example, not just by performance, but I think off the field by discipline and hard work,” he further said.

The Indian Cricket Team shared the complete video of Shubman Gill’s reaction on their official account on Instagram. Have a look at the video below.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill is currently busy with the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. He is the skipper of the Gujarat Titans (GT). He has shown a wonderful form in the tournament with the bat and as captain. He is among the top five highest run-scorers in the season. Titans have also qualified for the playoffs and are in the top spot in the points table with 18 points.
