Shubman Gill faced just three balls before getting injured.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has provided an update on captain Shubman Gill ahead of day three of the ongoing second test against South Africa. The match between the two teams is underway at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

India captain Shubman Gill faced a severe neck stiffness as he came out to bat in the first innings on day two. He played a sweep shot for four and then experienced pain in his neck following which he was taken off the field as he was unable to move his neck.

The injury looked much serious than expected as he didn’t come out to bat and was also absent from the field in the second innings. In his absence, Rishabh Pant took charge and has been leading the team as they eye winning the series opener.

He will take no further part in the Test match – BCCI on Shubman Gill

After day two’s play, Shubman Gill was taken to the hospital for examination. The BCCI mentioned that the test captain is under observation and is monitored by the medical team. They also clarified that he won’t be taking any further part in the game.

“Captain Shubman Gill had a neck injury on Day 2 of the ongoing Test against South Africa in Kolkata. He was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of the day’s play.

“He is currently under observation in the hospital. He will take no further part in the Test match. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team,” said BCCI.

There is no clarity whether he will be fit by the time the second match of the series begins. Revsportz reported that the pacer has been ruled out of the Guwahati test, which will begin on 22nd November.

If the reports emerge to be true, it will act as a big blow for India, especially with the kind of form Shubman Gill is in. If he is ruled out then Rishabh Pant will officially captain India in tests for the first time.
