Shubman Gill suffered neck injury during the first IND vs SA test.

Indian Cricket Team captain Shubman Gill is all set to travel with the team to Guwahati, where the second test of the series against South Africa begins. The match will kick start from 22nd November at Barsapara stadium and India are mulling over the fitness of their captain.

Shubman Gill injured his neck severely while batting in the first innings of the first test in Kolkata. The right-hander after facing just three balls left the field and was ruled out of the match. There is almost every chance that he might miss the game in Guwahati as he was also in a hospital for a night in Kolkata.

There were reports which claimed that Shubman Gill won’t travel to Guwahati as air travel is not advised for people with neck injuries. However, the sources close to Cricbuzz suggest that the Indian captain will be traveling with the side as there is no change in plan.

Amid all this, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) provided an update about Shubman Gill, saying that the Indian test captain has been responding well. They also mentioned that he will be travelling to Guwahati and decision related to his availability for second test will be take accordingly.

“Team India captain Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test against South Africa and was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day’s play. He was kept under observation and discharged the next day.

“Shubman has been responding well to the medical treatment provided and will travel to Guwahati with the team on 19th November, 2025. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team and a decision on his participation in the 2nd Test will be taken accordingly.”

The sources added that there were ideas to take Shubman Gill to Mumbai but the plan was dropped and will travel with the team to Guwahati on November 19.

“That was the original plan and there is no change as of now – Gill will travel,” a source in the know told Cricbuzz. “Barring a last-minute change, he should be in Guwahati.” There were suggestions that he fly to Mumbai for an expert opinion, but that plan was dropped.

Shubman Gill is under the keen observation of the medical team of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and local doctors. The selectors and team management want Gill to play but they don’t want to rush him either and will take the final call on his participation a day before the match.

With clouds over Shubman Gill’s participation, India also recalled Nitish Kumar Reddy, who was released from the squad for the first game. With plenty of left-handers in the Indian XI, Reddy might be the frontrunner to replace Gill in the XI.

The series is in favour of South Africa as they won the first match at Eden Gardens by 30 runs, as India failed to chase 124 in the second innings.
