Seamer Siddarth Kaul has called time on his professional career in India at the age of 34. On November 28, 2024, Kaul took to social media to confirm his retirement from Indian cricket.
Kaul bids adieu to international cricket, domestic cricket in India, and the Indian Premier League (IPL). With the retirement from all forms of professional cricket in India, Kaul is eligible to play in overseas T20 leagues and also in the legends league.
Kaul featured in three ODIs and three T20Is between June 2018 and February 2019 and took four wickets combined in those six games for India.
I feel I still have 3-4 years of cricket left in me: Siddarth Kaul
In the last domestic season, Siddarth Kaul played a pivotal role in helping Punjab win the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy, finishing as his side’s leading wicket-taker with 16 scalps in 10 outings. He was also Punjab’s highest wicket-taker with 19 wickets in only six games in the 50-overs Vijay Hazare Trophy.
While being in excellent form in domestic cricket, Kaul says he wanted to go out on a high note and hence has retired now, opening up the possibility of playing overseas as well.
“I feel I still have 3-4 years of cricket left in me, but I wanted to go out on a high, when I was at peak fitness and performing well rather than being asked to go due to fitness or non-performance at some other point,” he told ESPNcricinfo.
“If you see my graph over the past 9-10 years, I’ve been performing really well across formats. So I felt this was a good time to go. Hopefully going forward, whatever opportunities arise, like in county cricket [he represented Northamptonshire in three Division 2 Championship games this summer, picking up 13 wickets at 29.84], or Legends League, MLC etc, I’d like to explore them if I get the chance.”
Siddarth Kaul played for three IPL franchises from 2013 to 2022 – Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bengaluru – taking 58 wickets in 55 matches. His best IPL season was in 2018, when he took 21 wickets in SRH’s run up to the final.
In his 17-year domestic career, Kaul took 297 first-class wickets at an average of 26 and 199 List-A wickets. He was part of the 2008 U-19 World Cup winning team under Virat Kohli.
