Which six Indian captains have hit a double hundred in test cricket?

Among the notable achievements, becoming captain and making a double century in a test match is still uncommon and famous.On July 3, 2025, at Edgbaston, Shubman Gill made history by joining this exclusive club by slamming an incredible 269 against England. He became the first Asian captain to hammer a double ton in difficult SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) conditions, and it was not just his first test double hundred as captain. It was also the highest test score by an Indian captain.

As a monument to the combination of leadership and style that characterises these greats, Gill now joins a distinguished group of Indian captains who have achieved the 200+ milestone, including Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli.
His innings was more than simply a display of individual skill; it was a statement that a new generation of Indians has taken up the baton.
Meanwhile, the first Indian captain to score a double hundred was Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. Pataudi achieved this feat in 1964, when he scored 203* in Delhi. Then came Sunil Gavaskar, who made a double century against the West Indies in only his second test as India captain in Mumbai in 1978.
Then it took a long time for an Indian captain to score a double century in a tes, as Sachin Tendulkar achieved this feat. Tendulkar made 217 against New Zealand in Ahmedabad in 1999. MS Dhoni joined this elite list, when he made 224, his highest test score, against Australia in Chennai.
Finally, it was Virat Kohli, who holds the record for most double centuries as captain in tests with seven. This included his highest test score of 254*, which came against South Africa in 2019 in Pune.
