Sri Lanka lost the three-match ODI series against England by a margin of 2-1 on Tuesday, January 27.

Sri Lanka Cricket Team suffered a shocking defeat against the England Cricket Team in the three-match ODI series on Tuesday, January 27. The hosts lost the third encounter by 53 runs, failing to chase down a mammoth 358-run target.

England, after opting to bat first, attacked the Sri Lanka bowlers all over the park at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Their openers Rehan Ahmed (24) and Ben Duckett (7) failed to score big. With unbeaten centuries by Joe Root (111*) and Harry Brook (136*) along with a 65 by Jacob Bethell, the visitors dominated the home team.

In the chase, Pathum Nissanka (50) gave a promising start to Sri Lanka with his half-century, while Pavan Rathnayake (121) smashed a marvellous century to keep the winning hopes alive. However, the Charith Asalanka & Co. were eventually bowled out for 304 runs in the 47th over, with Jamie Overton, Liam Dawson, Adil Rashid, and Will Jacks clinching two wickets each for England.

The Harry Brook & Co. made a classic comeback after losing the first match. Earlier, the hosts won the opening game by 19 runs, while the visitors bagged a victory by five wickets in the second game. Both those matches also took place at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Root was adjudged Player of the Series, while Brook stole POTM in the final clash.

Notably, Sri Lanka were unbeaten at home in ODI series for the last few years. They last lost a home series in the 50-over format against India in July 2021. In the campaign, India won the first two games by seven wickets and three wickets respectively, before losing the final encounter by three wickets.

Since the campaign against the Men-in-Blue, Sri Lanka were unbeaten at home until now. Therefore, England have broken Sri Lanka’s unbeaten run at home after more than four-and-a-half years.
