Both openers KL Rahul (77 retd hurt) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (32) tackled the new ball well. Rahul-Jaiswal duo added 47 runs for the opening stand before Jaiswal got run out. Devdutt Padikkal (131*), who walked out at three, was the star of the day as he hit his maiden century.
Padikkal and Rahul added 150 runs for the second wicket and looked pretty good together before Rahul had to retire hurt. Captain Shubman Gill (16) failed to make mark, while Rishabh Pant (27*) played a decent hand as India ended day one at 288 for two. They would be keen to post a big first innings total tomorrow and take game out of Sri Lanka’s reach.

The opening sessions on day two of the SL vs IND Test will begin at 09:45 AM IST, with the session set to end at 12:00 PM IST. Following it will be a 40-minute lunch break, from 12:00 PM to 12:40 PM IST. It will be followed by the second session, running from 12:40 PM to 2:20 PM IST.
The tea break will last 20 minutes, after that. The last sessions on Day 2 in Galle will run from 3:00 PM to 5;00 PM IST. An extra 30 minutes will allowed to cover the daily quota of overs.
