Kamindu Mendis racked up his fifth test century during the second test against New Zealand.

Kamindu Mendis is having a dream start to his test career. The 25-year-old Sri Lankan is racking up runs and milestones, and breaking records like few batters have done at the start of their test careers. So much that he is nudging the average of Sir Don Bradman!

His numbers are simply astounding. At the time of writing, he is playing his eighth test match during the second test match against New Zealand in Galle.

So far, he has scored 945 runs at an average of 85 – which is unbelievable for a newcomer to test cricket. In 13 innings, he’s notched up five centuries and four half-centuries. He has hit at least a half-century in each of his eight tests so far. Mendis is the first batsman in the history of test cricket to make a fifty-plus score in each of his first eight tests.

Kamindu Mendis joins Don Bradman on an elite list

With his century in the second SL vs NZ test in Galle, Kamindu Mendis equalled Don Bradman in one of the records list.

This is Kamindu’s fifth test century, a feat he achieved in his 13th test innings, which is the same number of innings that Bradman took to reach five test tons. Kamindu and Bradman are the joint fourth-fastest to five test centuries.

This list is led by West Indies’ Everton Weakes, who needed only 10 knocks to crack five centuries in the longest format.

Fastest batters to five Test centuries:

  1. Everton Weakes (WI) – 10 innings
  2. Herbert Sutcliffe (ENG) – 12 innings
  3. Neil Harvey (AUS) – 12 innings
  4. Don Bradman (AUS) – 13 innings
  5. Kamindu Mendis (SL) – 13 innings

While he is the joint fourth-fastest to five test hundreds, Kamindu is the fastest among Asian batters. Among Asians, this record of being the fastest to five test tons was previously held by Pakistan’s Fawad Alam (22 innings).
