Smriti Mandhana led the RCB women’s team to WPL 2024 title.

On Sunday, March 17, at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) women’s team made history by defeating the Delhi Capitals in the summit match and winning the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 trophy.

Even though the Smriti Mandhana-led team only became victorious in the league’s second season, the triumph put an end to the franchise’s 16-year drought to win a trophy. Among the 16 Men’s Indian Premier League (IPL) editions played so far, RCB are one of just three original member teams to have never taken home the championship.

Despite being undoubtedly the most popular team and having some of the top players in the world in their ranks for the past 16 years, the Kohli-led RCB men’s sides have failed to win a trophy.

The team participated in three IPL finals and lost all three to the Deccan Chargers in 2009, the Chennai Super Kings in 2011, and the Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016. They also fell to the Mumbai Indians in the 2011 Champions League final.

Smriti Mandhana gives a brilliant reply to Aakash Chopra asking her to give tips to Virat Kohli after WPL win

Recently, after Smriti Mandhana led the RCB Women’s team to the WPL 2024 tournament win, ex-Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra suggested Mandhana visit the men’s team during the upcoming 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) and give a pep talk to Kohli and co.

Mandhana was taken aback by Chopra’s comment for a moment, but she quickly clarified that it was a matter she needed to consider carefully. Later, the captain of the RCB women’s team mentioned that, in addition to the World Cup and Champions Trophy, Kohli has won a number of other trophies. He does not, however, own the IPL trophy. She clarified that RCB’s men’s squad is yet to experience luck, which is a prerequisite for franchise cricket.

“Virat Kohli has achieved a lot. He’s a legend of the game, he’s won the World Cup and the Champions Trophy. I feel Franchisees cricket is a lot about luck, hopefully this Cup has started the luck for RCB. You never know,” said Mandhana in a chat with Jio Cinema.
