Sophie Devine was retained by RCB for the WPL 2025 season.

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru women’s team has suffered a major setback just weeks before their opening game of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 season against Gujarat Giants, as experienced all-rounder Sophie Devine will not feature in the upcoming season.

Devine played a key role in RCB’s title-winning campaign in 2024, scoring 136 runs and taking six wickets in ten matches.

She has been playing in the ongoing Super Smash for Wellington, where she has scored 38 runs and taken eight wickets in five games. Her last match was against Canterbury in Christchurch, where she claimed a match-winning 5/13.

Devine led the Kiwis to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 title. She then played in the ODIs against India, featured in the WBBL for Perth Scorchers, and was part of the ODI series against Australia in late December.

Sophie Devine to miss WPL 2025

The veteran New Zealand all-rounder Sophie Devine has chosen to skip the WPL 2025 to “prioritize her well-being” following professional advice. The 35-year-old will also miss the rest of the ongoing domestic season.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) stated in a press release that a decision on Devine’s playing future “will be announced in due course.” They added that NZC, Cricket Wellington, and RCB fully support her decision to take a break.

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Liz Green, NZC’s head of women’s high performance, emphasized that the player’s well-being is the top priority for the board and that everyone agrees this is the best course of action.

Green said, “Sophie’s had excellent support from the New Zealand Cricket Players Association and from our own high performance unit staff, and everyone agrees this is the best option available.

The most important thing for NZC is that Sophie has a decent break, receives good support and care, and is fit and well before returning to professional cricket.”
