Sophie Devine will lead New Zealand in ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025.

New Zealand women’s cricket team captain Sophie Devine, on Tuesday, June 17, announced she will retire from ODI cricket after the forthcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup later this year. However, she will lead the side in the ICC tournament, which will commence on September 30 and will be hosted by India.

Devine was appointed as the captain in 2020 and has led the side since then. Under her leadership, New Zealand Women won the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup last year in Dubai by defeating South Africa Women in the final. Devine is a batting all-rounder, who made her international debut in 2006.

The 35-year-old has played 151 ODIs for the White Ferns so far, hitting 3990 runs in 139 innings at an average of 31.67. She has slammed eight centuries and 16 fifties in WODIs. Bowling right-arm medium pace, Devine has scalped 107 wickets at an average of 35.72.

Right time to step away: Sophie Devine on ODI retirement call

After announcing her retirement from ODIs, the Kiwi stalwart said she is committed to her role for the upcoming months. She also feels it is the right time to step away from the format.

“It feels like the right time for me to start stepping away. I feel very fortunate to have New Zealand Cricket’s support in finding a solution that means I can still give to the White Ferns,” she said.

“It’s important that everyone knows I’m focused and dedicated to giving this group everything I can before I step away. I’m really excited by where this young group’s going and I’m looking forward to playing my part in the next six to nine months,” she added.

Meanwhile, Devine will continue to be part of the T20I side. However, she will not be part of the centrally contracted players. Under her leadership, the New Zealand Women’s team will aim for their second ODI World Cup title this year. They were the champions of the 2000 edition.
