Sourav Ganguly congratulated Shubman Gill for becoming the ODI captain.
Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly feels that selectors have made the right decision by appointing Shubman Gill as the new captain of Indian Cricket Team in ODI cricket. He also believes that the young batter will do well in future.
Ahead of India’s tour of Australia 2025, Gill replaced Rohit Sharma as the captain of the 50-over side. His first assignment will be the three-match ODI series against Australia, scheduled to be played from October 19 to 25.
Earlier in May, Gill was also appointed as the test captain following Rohit’s retirement. The 26-year-old led the team to a 2-2 draw in the five-match test series against England in August, where he also clinched the Player of the Series award for his outstanding performance with the bat.
Sourav Ganguly backs decision to name Shubman Gill as new ODI captain

While speaking to reporters, former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Ganguly said that selectors must have spoken to Rohit about the decision to change in captaincy.
“I am sure Rohit must have been spoken to. I am sure it’s a mutual discussion. Rohit has been an outstanding leader. He has won the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy,” he said.
Ganguly also reckoned that it was a good call to name Gill as the new captain now, as he can be groomed by Rohit for the future.
“Even Shubman Gill will face the same at 40. Everyone in sport has to finish someday. Not a bad decision to promote Gill. He’s shown a lot of talent in England. I think it’s a fair call… Rohit can keep playing while you groom a young captain,” he said.
“I congratulate him. He has done well in England; he will do well in the future as well. The Indian team is very good. All the players perform well and that is why they have been given the chance,” Ganguly added.
Gill is currently busy with the second test against the West Indies, which is underway at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The hosts lead the two-match series 1-0 after winning the opening game in Ahmedabad by an innings and 140 runs. The Indian players are expected to depart for Australia on October 15.
Meanwhile, the ODI series against Australia will observe the much-awaited return of Rohit and Virat Kohli to the national team. The duo last played for India in March during ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
