BCCI has snubbed Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan from their central contracts.
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly believes that the BCCI Secretary Jay Shah and President Roger Binny need to speak to wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan regarding the central contract row.
The apex council took a massive step as they snubbed premium Indian batters Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from their central contracts. Since then, the development regarding this huge step taken by BCCI continues to get hotter with many former Indian cricketers giving their opinions regarding the removal of Ishan and Iyer from their central contracts.
The BCCI‘s tough call has divided the Indian cricketing fraternity. While most are backing BCCI’s decision, others feel this is a harsh call by the apex council to remove Kishan and Iyer from their central contracts.
Kishan and Iyer were both were both enlisted in the Grade C contract. It is to be noted that Kishan last played for India in November 2023 during the T20 series against Australia, while Iyer featured in the first two test matches against England.
The selectors need to speak to Ishan Kishan: Sourav Ganguly
Ganguly said that the current Indian cricketers can play both red-ball and white-ball cricket. However, wicketkeeper batter Kishan left the Indian team mid-tour in South Africa and was named in the squad for the five-test match against England.
“I think this is the first time that someone has not played or ignored red-ball domestic cricket. Otherwise, all of them have played Ranji Trophy when they were free. I am sure the BCCI will take proper action,” Sourav Ganguly told Times of India.
He also added that he was surprised by Kishan and Iyer’s decision to skip the Ranji Trophy and not follow BCCI’s norms. The former BCCI chief selector said that secretary Jay Shah, President Roger Binny, and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar need to have a word with Ishan Kishan to correct him.
“For someone like Ishan Kishan, BCCI secretary Jay Shah, president Roger Binny and the selectors need to speak to him. All this while he has played Ranji and then played white-ball cricket. Has it made him a poorer player? It hasn’t,” Sourav Ganguly said.
Meanwhile, Kishan has returned to cricketing action. The wicketkeeper batter is playing for the Reserve Bank of India in the DY Patil T20 Cup tournament. Whereas, middle-order batter Iyer is playing for his domestic team Mumbai, in the Ranji Trophy 2023–24 semi-final clash against Tamil Nadu.
