Sourav Ganguly joins the bandwagon as he picks India's No. 4 for ICC Cricket World Cup 2023
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has joined the ODI No.4 debate.
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has downplayed India’s selection dilemma for the No. 4 position in the India ODI side. India’s middle order is reeling under injuries, with the absence of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer who are still in rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). India are in search of a number 4 option to replace Iyer. According to a media report from NCA, KL Rahul looks fit enough for a comeback, but Shreyas Iyer is still doubtful. Iyer’s absence has opened the door for players looking for an opportunity in the Indian middle order. Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has batted for Tilak Varma.
Sourav Ganguly bats for Tilak Varma
Sourav Ganguly looks pretty impressed with Tilak Varma after his superb performance in the recently concluded West Indies tour and expressed that Tilak can be an option to replace Shreyas Iyer, and India doesn’t lack options in the middle order. The former Indian captain said, “Who said we don’t have a number 4? We have so many batters who can bat at that spot. I think differently; my mindset is different. This is a fantastic side. I see Tilak Varma as an option, being a left-hander.” Ganguly also said that being a left-hander is also an advantage for him.
Apart from Tilak Varma, he also said that he wants to see Yashasvi Jaiswal in the squad. Yashasvi also made his international debut against West Indies in T20Is and tests. Sourav Ganguly said, “He is a very good young player, not with much experience, but it does not matter. I also want to see the young left-hander (Yashasvi) on the side at the top of the order. He has enormous ability, and he’s fearless. So, this is a great side.” Tilak Varma scored 173 runs in five innings against West Indies. Tilak and Yashasvi both had great IPL 2023 season for their respective franchises.
Indian selectors will meet on August 21 under the leadership of Ajit Agarkar and pick the best 15 players for the Asia Cup 2023. The Asia Cup 2023 tournament squad will make things clear and put forth the vision of the World Cup 2023. Most of the Indian squad looks clear, with only a few options still in contention. The number 4 position in the batting order, an extra spinner, and a reserved wicket-keeper option will be discussed. India will be playing their opening Asia Cup clash against Pakistan on September 2 at Pallekele.
