Sourav Ganguly feels Shreyas Iyer should’ve been picked in India squad for England tests.

Indian Cricket Team will commence their campaign in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 with the upcoming test series against England, starting June 20. The opening encounter will be played at Headingley in Leeds. The test series will conclude with the fifth test at The Kennington, Oval on 4th August.

Following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from test cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed Shubman Gill as the new skipper of the test team. He will be joined by his deputy Rishabh Pant in the leadership department as Indian selectors revealed the squad for the England tests last month.

One of the notable omissions from the India squad was Shreyas Iyer, who has shown wonderful form across formats in the last one year. Iyer’s absence became a talking point with many raising questions over his omission from the team.

Shreyas Iyer should’ve been in Indian team for England tests, feels Sourav Ganguly

During a conversation with RevSportz, former India captain Sourav Ganguly said that Iyer should have been included in the team for the England series. The former BCCI President highlighted the batter’s purple patch with the bat.

“He has been playing at his best in the last one year, and should have been in this team. Last one year has been fantastic for him. He isn’t the player who got left out. He is now scoring under pressure, taking responsibility, playing the short ball well. Although Test cricket’s different, I would have had him in this series to see what he can do,” the 52-year-old said.

Recently, Shreyas Iyer led the Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 for the first time in 11 years. He also showed wonderful form with the bat, smacking 604 runs in 17 matches, ending the league as sixth highest run-scorer. Last season, he propelled Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the title under his leadership.

During the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 earlier this year, the right-handed batsman finished as the leading run-getter for the winners India with 243 runs in five innings. While revealing the Indian squad for the England series last month, chief selector Ajit Agarkar mentioned that there was no place for Iyer in the current test team.
