Indian star Virat Kohli has averaged 29.65 in Test cricket since January 2020.

Virat Kohli with his batting at the end of day 4 infused hope among Indian fans in the World Test Championship Final against Australia at The Oval. Virat Kohli was out on 49 in the second innings as the first wicket of the final day. With his wicket, India’s hopes were also crushed and India suffered a huge defeat by 209 runs.

This was India's second consecutive WTC Final loss in the last two years. In 2021, India lost to New Zealand under Virat Kohli’s leadership. After India’s multiple failures in ICC events, debate around big names started. Is it time to look beyond the big names in Indian cricket?

Sourav Ganguly comes forward to support Virat Kohli

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has now come out in support of India’s senior test players and said that they still have a few crickets left in them and, certainly not the time to look beyond Virat or Pujara. Sourav Ganguly said, “Let’s not jump to conclusions due to just one loss, India will always have talent. And I don’t think it is time to look beyond Virat or Pujara, Virat is just 34”. Virat Kohli since November 2019 has scored only two test hundreds, his last test ton came against Australia in Nagpur in the 4th Border-Gavaskar Trophy test which ended in a draw.

The superstar batter has averaged only 29.65 in his last 44 innings since January 2020. Virat has only 1275 runs in his last 44 innings since the decade has changed. He also had a fallout with Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly in 2021 when he was sacked from the leadership role of the limited overs format. Virat later gave up the captaincy in Test Cricket as well after the South Africa tour in January 2022. Virat contradicted the BCCI’s official line before heading to South Africa and this became a huge controversy in Indian cricket around Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli.
