Temba Bavuma left out of ODIs and T20Is as South Africa announce squads for multi-format India series

South Africa to play 3 ODIs, 3 T20Is and 2 tests against India at home starting December 10.

Cricket South Africa announced the national team squads for the upcoming all-format series against India at home. South Africa and India will clash in a series of 3 T20Is, 3 ODIs, and 2 test matches starting December 10.

Temba Bavuma, South Africa’s ODI captain, and fast bowler Kagiso Rabada have been rested from their white-ball series against India later this month to prepare for the following two tests. Bavuma led South Africa to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 semi-finals and remains the official 50-over captain, but Aiden Markram will lead the team in his absence for India series.

For the same reason, Gerald Coetzee, Marco Jansen, and Lungi Ngidi will only play in the first two T20Is. Bavuma, Rabada, Coetzee, Jansen, and Ngidi will all play in a set of domestic first-class matches from December 14 to 17 to prepare for the tests.

South Africa announce squad against India

Tristan Stubbs has been named in the test squad for the first time, along with batter David Bedingham and fast bowler Nandre Burger, who are both expected to be part of South Africa’s side to face New Zealand in February as well.

Wicket-keeper batter Kyle Verreynne and fast bowler Lungi Ngidi will be making their comebacks after being dropped last summer, but Heinrich Klaasen is left out of the test team. Anrich Nortje, who was ruled out of the World Cup due to a lower back stress fracture, is out of the game in all formats.
