South Africa cricketers who were part of ICC Champions Trophy squad in 2017 and included in 2025
South Africa were knocked out in the group stage of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) have announced their 15-player squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled to take place in Pakistan and Dubai from February 19. The Proteas are placed in Group B with Afghanistan, England, and Australia.
While they reached the finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 and the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025, South Africa’s form in ODI cricket has been disappointing. The Proteas were recently whitewashed in the ODI series against Pakistan at home and previously lost a series to Afghanistan in the UAE.
Their performance in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy was underwhelming when they were knocked out in the group stages after losses to India and Pakistan.
On that note, let’s take a look at the South Africa cricketers who were part of ICC Champions Trophy squad in 2017 and are picked up for the 2025 edition as well.
South Africa cricketers who were part of ICC Champions Trophy squad in 2017 and are included in 2025:
1. David Miller
Veteran batsman David Miller has been a key man in the middle-order for the Proteas for nearly a decade. The southpaw scored a sensational century in the semi-finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia but his side still lost the match.
In the 2017 Champions Trophy, Miller was his side’s third leading run-scorer with 94 runs in three innings at an average of 47.
2. Keshav Maharaj
Keshav Maharaj is South Africa’s lead spinner for the upcoming tournament. Known for his discipline, Maharaj has worked hard on improving his limited-overs bowling in recent years.
Maharaj was part of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 squad, but didn’t play a game in the tournament, as Imran Tahir was preferred as the sole spinner.
3. Kagiso Rabada
One of the most feared fast bowlers of the current generation, Kagiso Rabada will lead South Africa’s bowling attack in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Rabada was part of the squad that suffered a home ODI series whitewash against Pakistan.
In the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, Rabada picked up just one wicket in three matches at an average of 116 and an economy rate of 4.83. The Proteas will expect their strike bowler to perform better if they have to end their ICC tournament drought.
