South Africa name Juan James as new skipper for U19 World Cup 2024

Juan James will replace David Teeger as skipper of South African U19 World Cup team.
Cricket South Africa named Juan James as their new skipper of the U19 World Cup team. South Africa removed David Teeger as their captain of the side following fears of protest over his pro-Israel statement. South Africa will be hosting the 15th edition of the U19 World Cup. South Africa were declared the hosts of the tournament after the International Cricket Council (ICC) decided to take the hosting rights from Sri Lanka Cricket.
The tournament will begin on 19th January and the finals is set to be played at Willowmoore Park in Benoni. All-rounder Juan James led South Africa U19 side against Bangladesh U19 in the third and fifth ODI games during the five-match ODI series played last year in July. CSA sacked David Teeger three days ago. South Africa will play their opening game against West Indies on 19th January.
Juan James appointed the new captain
Cricket South Africa released an statement where they feared protests related to Gaza might take place at U19 World Cup venues in South Africa. CSA stated, “We have been advised that protests related to the war in Gaza can be anticipated at the venues for the tournament.” They also highlighted the position of outgoing skipper David Teegar who is a vocal supporter of Israel in the Gaza Conflict.
While removing David Teeger as captain of SA U19, CSA said that this conflict will lead to a unwanted situation during the tournament. CSA added, “CSA has a primary duty to safeguard the interests and safety of all those involved in the World Cup and must accordingly respect the expert advice of those responsible for the safety of participants and spectators.”
Newly appointed skipper Juan James has the experience of playing domestic cricket in South Africa. James has played five First class, five List A and five T20 games in South African domestic cricket. In recently concluded tri-series against India and Afghanistan, Juan James picked up three wickets. South Africa are placed in group B along with West Indies, Scotland and England in the U19 World Cup 2024.
