South Africa name second-string squad for test tour of New Zealand; No seniors due to SA20
Uncapped Neil Brand has been named South Africa captain for the two-match test series in New Zealand.
South Africa have announced their test squad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand which consists of youth and inexperienced players. With the looming presence of the SA20 tournament sidelining the senior players, Proteas have named the uncapped opening batting all-rounder Neil Brand as the captain for the two-match test series beginning on February 4.
The absence of key players, including Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma, and Kagiso Rabada, who will actively participating in the SA20 tournament starting on January 10, has forced South Africa to assemble a second-string squad.

Only three players from the squad of ongoing series against India have been named for the NZ tour. Keegan Petersen, David Bedingham, and injury-replacement Zubayr Hamza will make the trip to New Zealand. Unfortunately, Shukri Conrad, the red-ball coach, faced a last-minute setback when Tony de Zorzi, slated to open the batting, signed up with Durban’s Super Giants.
The Proteas’ new-look team, under the captaincy of Neil Brand, faces the challenging task of competing in the World Test Championship cycle for 2023–25. The absence of familiar faces will undoubtedly test the mettle of these young cricketers, presenting an opportunity for them to showcase their talent on the international stage.
Despite these hurdles, South African squad heading to New Zealand are not entirely without experience. Eight capped test players, with a combined total of 50 games, form the backbone of the team. Leading the bowling attack is the seasoned seamer Duanne Olivier, who has played 15 test matches. Keegan Petersen follows with 12 games, providing a semblance of stability to a relatively inexperienced squad.
