Laura Wolvaardt will captain the South Africa Women’s team in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025.
Cricket South Africa, on September 3, 2025, announced the South Africa Women’s squad for the upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 to be played in India and Sri Lanka.
Under head coach Mandla Mashimbyi, who permanently replaced Hilton Moreeng last year, this will be South Africa’s first major tournament participation. Despite winning a series against the West Indies in June, South Africa has only won four of 10 ODIs under Mashimbyi.
The team, which includes seasoned campaigners Chloe Tryon, Marizanne Kapp, Sune Luus, and Ayabonga Khaka, will be led by Laura Wolvaardt. The designated wicketkeepers are Karabo Meso and Sinalo Jafta. Meso has already competed in a few Under-19 World Cups and is expected to play in her maiden senior World Cup.
“From the moment I joined this team, and even before my time when the squad went through the qualification phase, it was all about working towards this moment. We can look back at the amount of preparation we have put in and know that we have done our best. We are ready to send a squad to the World Cup that will make South Africa proud.”
“I am happy for all the players and management who will be getting on that plane to India, but I am even more excited to see what they can achieve together as a group. We believe we have the squad of players that can go out there and deliver on the world stage. Now it is all about carrying that belief with us every step of the way, along with the support of the entire nation,” head coach Mandla Mashimbyi said, as per the ICC.
Dane van Niekerk misses out, teenager Karabo Meso makes the cut in South Africa squad
As anticipated, Dane van Niekerk, the former captain, was left out of the Women’s World Cup roster. After just rescinding her international retirement, Van Niekerk was selected for a 20-person group to train for the tournament; however, she ultimately did not make the squad.
The 17-year-old wicketkeeper-batswoman Karabo Meso will attend her maiden World Cup. Although she has only played seven senior international matches and has only two ODI caps, she has participated in two Under-19 World Cups. Two players will be participating in their first World Cup, including Meso. The other is off-spin-bowling all-rounder Nondumiso Shangase, who was called up to the South African team in May.
After placing second in the group stage and losing to England in Christchurch, South Africa advanced to the semi-finals of the previous tournament. On October 3, the Proteas will play England in Guwahati to start their Cricket World Cup campaign. They will next travel to Indore to play New Zealand before facing the hosts, India, in Visakhapatnam.
