Sri Lanka cricket secretary resigns amid World Cup exit and board criticism
Mohan de Silva steps down from the post of Sri Lanka cricket’s secretary.
Sri Lanka Cricket’s secretary, Mohan de Silva, stepped down from his position on Saturday. He decided to resign because many people criticised the cricket board after Sri Lanka performed poorly in the men’s ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Additionally, the sports minister of Sri Lanka asked the executive committee of SLC to resign or face serious consequences.
De Silva didn’t give an official reason for his resignation, but it’s believed to be partly because of Sri Lanka’s bad performance in the World Cup, and personal reasons also played a role.
For the past year, there has been ongoing tension between Sri Lanka’s sports minister and SLC. This tension has been due to various issues, including how the board managed its finances, especially during last year’s Men’s T20 World Cup, Lanka Premier League, and how they organised other domestic tournaments.
SLC secretary resigns
Usually, SLC (Sri Lanka Cricket) gets along fine with the sports minister, but sometimes they have disagreements. According to Sri Lanka’s sports laws, the sports ministry oversees SLC and other national sports organizations. However, when it comes to cricket, ICC (International Cricket Council) has a rule that prevents the government from getting directly involved in the sport.
The last time the government set up an “interim committee” to take over SLC in place of the elected committee was in 2014. During that time, ICC held onto the money that was supposed to go to SLC.
The sports minister made a two-page report where they said that SLC had lots of issues, like not giving good places for training and getting better after getting hurt. Players have been complaining about this for a long time.
SLC’s bosses have talked back to the minister with strong words in the last few months. But when the men’s cricket team did badly in the World Cup, things changed for a little while.
