No play will happen on Saturday in Galle in the 1st Sri Lanka vs New Zealand test.
For the first time in 16 years, a test match will have a rest day as the ongoing 1st Sri Lanka vs New Zealand test in Galle will be halted on Saturday, 21st September, and will resume on Sunday, 22nd September, from the point it ended on Friday, 20th September.
The 1st Sri Lanka vs New Zealand test in Galle is scheduled to span six days, from September 18 to 23, with a break on September 21.
The day 3 of the test match has ended on Friday and day 4 will be played on Sunday, with Monday being the day 5.
Why does Sri Lanka vs New Zealand 1st test have a break on Day 4 of the game (21st September)?
This is because of Sri Lanka’s presidential election on Saturday. This means that most of the Sri Lankan players and officials will be travelling to their electorate to vote.
The team has organised a bus for those voting in Colombo. They are expected to vote on Saturday morning and return.
Some players will travel far from Galle. Asitha Fernando will go to Katuneriya, roughly 175 kilometres from Galle, and Lahiru Kumara will go to Kandy, about 225 kilometres away.
Apart from the players, many ground staff, journalists, commentators, match officials, and board staff will also travel to vote.
The last time there was a rest day or a day’s break in between a test match was in 2008 during the Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh test in Dhaka to allow Bangladesh’s players to vote in their parliamentary elections.
