Steve Smith closes in on Don Bradman as he achieves HUGE feat in Ashes history after his Sydney century

Steve Smith scored his first century of The Ashes 2025-26 in the fifth test in Sydney.
Australia’s stand-in captain Steve Smith hammered a marvellous century in the first innings of the fifth test of The Ashes 2025-26 on Tuesday, January 6. The right-handed batsman reached the three-figure mark on day 3 of the encounter, which is being played at Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney.
After England piled up a strong total of 384/10 in the first innings, Australian opener Travis Head scored a stunning century in the first session on day 3, hitting 163 runs before becoming a victim of spinner Jacob Bethel.
Batting at number five, Smith followed up on his brilliant start, reaching the three-figure mark off 166 deliveries. With his knock, he helped Australia to surpass England’s first innings total and cross 500 runs on the scoreboard.

Notably, the 36-year-old batter registered his 37th century in test cricket. Moreover, he also surpassed former England batter Jack Hobbs in the list of batters with the most runs in Ashes history. Hobbs scored 3636 runs in 41 games in his career across 71 innings.
Smith has overtaken his tally in his 73rd innings across 41 games, hitting 13 tons so far. Now, he is only behind Australian batting legend Sir Don Bradman’s tally (5028 runs).
