Steve Smith attained the 10,000-run landmark in the first Galle test against Sri Lanka.

Steve Smith reached his 10000th run in test cricket on Wednesday, January 29 on day 1 of the first test of the two-match test series against Sri Lanka in Galle.

Smith had fallen short by just one run of the 10000-run mark at his home ground in Sydney earlier this month in the fifth test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 against India.

He got to this huge milestone on the first ball he faced in his innings in Australia’s first innings in Galle. Smith flicked left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya on the leg side to take a single and become only the fourth Australian batsman to get to the 10000-run milestone. He also became the 15th batsman in the world to do so.

Before Smith, the three Australian batsmen who reached the 10000-run landmark were Allan Border, Steve Waugh, and Ricky Ponting.

Most test runs for Australia:

  1. Ricky Ponting – 13378 runs
  2. Allan Border – 11174 runs
  3. Steve Waugh – 10927 runs
  4. Steve Smith – 10000* runs
  5. David Warner – 8786 runs

Among the top five Australian test run-scorers, Smith’s average of 55.86 is the best. He’s so far notched up 34 test centuries, the second-most for Australia, behind only Ricky Ponting’s tally of 41 test tons.

During the Sydney test against India, Smith only needed 38 more runs to get to 10000 test runs, but he was dismissed for 33 and 4.

On the eve of the Galle test, he said, “I’ll just try to put it out of my mind, to be honest. I probably thought too much about it in Sydney. This time I’ll just try to forget it and focus on job at hand.”

Smith is leading Australia on the test tour of Sri Lanka as Pat Cummins had opted out due to the birth of his child.

At lunch on day 1, Australia are 145/2. Openers Travis Head and Usman Khawaja belted half-centuries after Smith won the toss and elected to bat first.
