Steve Smith has managed to score only 232 runs in 13 innings in tests in the year 2024.
Australian top-order batter Steve Smith stands as one of the greatest test batsmen of all time. A modern-day great, Smith has achieved many historic milestones in his test career.
Smith made his test debut against Pakistan in 2010 at the Lord’s. Starting his career as a bowling all-rounder, Smith transformed into a middle-order batsman and has so far piled up over 9000 test runs and averages over 50.
Smith’s recent form, however, has raised question marks on his future in test cricket. Smith has been in awful test form in 2024, averaging 23.30 with only one half-century in 13 innings. His woes against quality bowling has continued in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 against India.
Returning to his natural No. 4 position, Steve Smith has struggled to make an impact against India, managing scores of 0, 19, and 2 in the ongoing series. The star middle-order batter has fallen to Jasprit Bumrah twice and Mohammed Siraj once.
What’s particularly concerning for Smith is his frequent LBW dismissals. Once a master of the leg side, Smith now often misses flick shots, which has become a primary reason for his downfall.
When was the last time Steve Smith scored a test century?
Smith’s last test century came against England at the Lord’s during Ashes 2023. Batting first, Smith smashed a hundred on day two of the second test. His sensational innings of 110 runs off 184 balls included 15 boundaries. Smith’s innings propelled Australia to a total of 416 runs.
Australia ultimately won the test on the last day by a narrow margin of 43 runs. Steve Smith was named Player of the Match for his 144 runs in the game.
Since that match, Smith has played 12 tests, but is yet to reach the triple figures. In last 12 tests, Smith has accumulated 591 runs at an average of 29.55 with four fifties. He has got dismissed on a duck twice in this phase.
