After sustaining a finger injury during the ICC World test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final, Australia‘s star batsman Steve Smith has given a positive update, stating that surgery is not necessary and estimating how long it will take him to recuperate.
On the third day of Australia’s loss to South Africa at the Lord’s, Steve Smith was fielding at the slips when he suffered an injury to his right little finger.
The tragedy happened as the 36-year-old tried a sharp catch from Temba Bavuma, and he was transported to the hospital right away. Smith has been lucky to escape surgery despite the injury’s excruciating severity.
“I’ll be in splints”- Steve Smith gives update on his finger injury
It was later determined that Smith’s right little finger had sustained a complex dislocation. Despite avoiding surgery, the medical staff has recommended that he will have to wear a splint for eight weeks.
Smith made his initial remarks regarding his injury, as cited by ICC: “I will be in a splint for eight weeks now, and I may be able to play with it in a couple of weeks. It will depend on my functionality and what I am able to do, so it was probably the best result I could have hoped for.”
According to Steve Smith, he was standing closer to the batter and lost sight of the ball when Bavuma edged one behind, and many edges missed the first and second slips because of the pitch’s irregular bounce.
“I was standing pretty close with the helmet on, and as we saw throughout the game, a lot of nicks went short of first and second slip. The plan was to stand pretty close, and I lost sight of it with the angle that Mitchell Starc was bowling, and it kind of went inside Bavuma’s hip, and I didn’t quite see it until really late, and it kind of dipped on me a little bit late too.
“It was tricky, it didn’t go in my hand very well, and fortunately, there is no break there and it just split the skin and dislocated it, which made me feel pretty ill at that stage,” he said.
