India's tour of South Africa 2024
Sunil Gavaskar decodes Shubman Gill's failure in Test cricket

Sunil Gavaskar has suggested Shubman Gill to make a few changes in his batting style.
The calendar year 2023 has been a prolific one for the Indian opener Shubman Gill in limited-overs cricket. He started the year with a bang and joined the elite list of batters with double centuries in ODI cricket. Despite having a stellar run in the ODIs, the Indian opener failed to make a mark in Test cricket this year. Gill’s test average remains under 30 in Test cricket in 2023.
Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has suggested Shubman Gill make a few changes in his batting style. Gavaskar found some glitches in Gill’s approach in tests. Right-hand batter Gill had a disappointing game against South Africa in the first test played at Supersport Park in Centurion and scored just 28 runs in two innings.
Gavaskar suggests changes to Gill
Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar has suggested Shubman Gill to make a shift in his aggressive style of batting in test cricket. Gavaskar said, “I think he is playing a bit too aggressively in Test cricket. There is a slight difference when you play Test cricket when compared to T20I and ODI cricket. The difference is in the ball.”
Sunil Gavaskar added, “The red ball moves a little more than the white ball in the air and off the pitch as well. It bounces a little more too. He should keep that in mind.” Shubman Gill got out hastily in both innings at Supersport Park. In the first innings, he was caught down the leg side while in the second he was trying to play across the line when India were trailing by 163 runs.
After making debut in 2020, Gill’s test average has never crossed 30. In 2021 he scored at an average of 29.87, in 2022 his batting average was 29.66 and in the current calendar year his average stands at 28.66. Shubman Gill shifted himself down in the batting order after Cheteshwar Pujara’s exclusion from the squad, but this also made no changes in his luck in tests.
