Sunil Gavaskar says Rohit Sharma will be judged
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar reveals why Rohit Sharma will be judged.
Rohit Sharma has been a successful skipper in the Indian Premier League, with five IPL titles under his name for Mumbai Indians. In the last two ICC tournaments, India played under his leadership. India lost the semi-final against England in the T20 World Cup in Australia and lost the World Test Championship final against Australia. Virat Kohli gave up from limited-overs captaincy, despite having a stellar record in the bilateral tournaments. Rohit was picked to break the jinx but has failed to do so in his previous two assignments. Rohit will now have two more major events, Asia Cup and ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, to let everyone judge his leadership skills.
Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has said that Rohit Sharma will only be judged by how many ICC titles he has under his name as captain. Gavaskar said, “At the end of the day, you are judged by the number of trophies you have won and the number of wins you have. Winning these tournaments will make him one of India’s greatest.” So far, only three Indian captains have been able to win the big ICC multinational championship. Kapil Dev won the World Cup in 1983, Sunil Gavaskar won the World Championship title in 1985, and MS Dhoni won three ICC titles. Dhoni won the T20 World Cup in 2007, World Cup in 2011, and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. After that, India failed to retain an ICC title.
Sunil Gavaskar says all-rounder will be important
Sunil Gavaskar also highlighted the importance of an all-rounder in winning the big ICC events. Team India lacks options with part-time bowlers as well as tailenders who can contribute with the bat. Sunil Gavaskar said, “More than anything, luck of the day is very important, and if you look at the teams in 1983, 1985, and 2011, they all had top-class all-rounders. You had batters who could bowl 7-8-9 overs and bowlers who could bat down the order. That was the biggest plus for the teams. You see, on MSD’s team, Yuvraj, Suresh Raina, Sachin Tendulkar, and Virender Sehwag could all bowl. It was the biggest plus. So any team that has an all-rounder will hold the edge.”
The final Indian squad announcement is yet to be made. Selectors will meet on September 5 to finalize the final 15-members squad that will go into World Cup. Before that, team India will be taking part in Asia Cup 2023 in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Indian team’s World Cup campaign will begin on October 8 at Chepauk Stadium in Chennai against Australia. India are scheduled to play two warm-up games, one against the England on September 30 and then against Netherlands on October 3. India have lost four consecutive ICC finals in the last 10 years.
