Former India cricketer Suresh Raina has been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding an illegal betting app case. According to a report in Hindustan Times, the ED is set to question Raina on Wednesday (August 13) over his involvement through endorsements in the online betting platform 1XBet.
Notably, the 1XBet app is being investigated over charges of money laundering. The agency wants to understand Raina’s alleged connections with the batting app through various endorsements.
According to reports, the online betting market in India is estimated to be worth around $100 million. In the first three months of 2025, illegal betting apps and websites witnessed over 1.6 billion visits. Annually, these illegal betting apps evade tax worth INR 27,000 crores.
Online betting apps are in violation of Indian laws
While speaking to Hindustan Times, an ED official revealed that these illegal betting apps violate many Indian laws.
“These platforms are in violation of multiple laws and directions by the Indian government… It is estimated that around 22 crore (220 million) Indian users are currently engaged on various betting apps, and 11 crore (110 million) of these are regular users,” he said.
Last year, ED attached assets worth INR 337 crores of betting app companies involved in cricket match betting during the Indian Premier League (IPL). Directors of online betting platform Fairplay were accused of illegal broadcasting of IPL matches and online betting activities.
Meanwhile, Raina was last seen in World Championship of Legends 2025 last month, playing for India Champions. The Yuvraj Singh-led side reached the semi-finals of the tournament, where they backed out by refusing to play against Pakistan in the encounter. Raina is also an active commentator after retiring from international cricket in 2020.
