India's tour of West Indies 2023
Suryakumar Yadav acknowledges dominance in T20Is, admits challenges in ODIs
Suryakumar Yadav wins the man of the match award against West Indies in the third T20I.
Suryakumar Yadav roared back into the spotlight during the third T20I against West Indies in Guyana. After India suffered setbacks in the opening two games of the series, Yadav’s spectacular knock of 83 runs off 44 balls not only secured a thrilling victory but also highlighted his prowess in the shortest format of the game. Yadav’s performance serves as a timely reminder of his remarkable capabilities. Along with Tilak Varma, Surya build a much needed partnership in the middle to guide the team to a win.
Yadav’s heroics in the 3T20I match raised the discussion about his contrasting performances in the ODI format. Despite his undeniable talent, the one-day format has posed challenges for the stylish batter since his debut. With 511 runs in 26 ODIs at an average of 24.33, Yadav admitted his struggle to find consistency in the 50-over format. His confession raises many questions about the factors influencing his contrasting form across formats.
“T20I is a format that I have gotten used to because I play it so much. But in ODI, on the other hand, we do not play a lot. I feel that it is the most challenging format because you have to bat in every possible way. If I come into bat early with a few wickets down, I have to bat like Test cricket, then I have to score one run a ball, and then I have to adopt my T20 approach in the final overs.” said Suryakumar Yadav.
He illustrates the complex nature of ODI batting, where he might need to adapt his approach based on the match situation, be it building an innings like in Test cricket or accelerating like in T20.
“T20s, it is much easier for me”: Suryakumar Yadav on his T20I forte
While struggling in ODIs, Yadav finds comfort and confidence in T20Is. He acknowledges the ease with which he expresses himself in the shorter format, indicating that his comfort level and familiarity contribute to his stellar performances.
“What the team management has told me is that I am trying to adapt. I am trying to fulfill their faith in me. In T20s, it is much easier for me to express myself,” he added.
Yadav’s acceptance of the challenges in ODIs doesn’t dampen his spirit. He remains determined in his commitment to improve and adapt to the demands of the 50-over game. With the highly anticipated ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 this year, he expresses optimism about overcoming his ODI struggles.
