Suryakumar Yadav made his T20I debut for India in 2021.

Suryakumar Yadav is one of the most dangerous T20 batsmen in the world. While he made his domestic debut in 2010, it took 11 more years for Suryakumar to get his maiden India cap.

After prolific performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Suryakumar made his T20I and ODI debuts in 2021 and test debut in 2023. While his ODI and test careers dwindled soon, Suryakumar propelled himself as among the elites in T20 cricket.

He was an instant hit in T20Is for India. Suryakumar Yadav hit Jofra Archer for a six on the first ball he faced in international cricket and went from strength to strength in the shortest format. In November 2022, he became the No. 1 ranked ICC men’s T20I batsman for the first time in his career and hogged the spot for a significant period of time.

He has a terrific T20I record: in 81 T20Is, Suryakumar has scored 2596 runs, the third-most for India in T20Is, at an average of 39 and strike rate of 167. He’s hit four T20I hundreds, the second-most in the world, and 21 fifties.

After the T20I retirement of Rohit Sharma in June 2024, Suryakumar Yadav was named the new T20I skipper of the Indian team. He had previously also led India in a few T20Is in an interim capacity.

His form, however, since becoming the Indian T20I captain last year has been underwhelming by his own lofty standards.

Let’s have a look at his stats as a captain and non-captain.

Suryakumar Yadav’s stats in T20Is when not captaining:

In 61 matches as a non-captain, Suryakumar scored 2040 runs at an average of 43 and strike rate of 168. He smacked three tons and 17 fifties.

Suryakumar Yadav’s stats in T20Is as captain:

Even while being the captain, Suryakumar has continued the same attacking intent – as reflected in his strike rate of 165 – but his runs have dried up. As India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar has averaged only 29, which a significant drop from his average of 43 when he was not the captain.

In 19 knocks as India’s T20I skipper, Suryakumar has recorded four fifties and one century.
