Nepal defeated Mongolia by a record-breaking margin of 273 runs in Asian Games Men T20I.
The men's T20I competition began at the ongoing Asian Games 2023 on Wednesday. The first game saw a contest between Nepal and Mongolia at the Pingfeng Campus Cricket Field in Hangzhou, and it was probably a once-in-a-lifetime kind of performance from Nepal. From batting to bowling, they broke a number of records in this game.
This match saw the highest score, highest win margin, fastest fifty, and fastest century in T20I cricket history. All in all, this game will be always remembered by the fans, and some of these records will not be broken again. The list of T20I records broken by Nepal in the first game of the men's T20I tournament at Asian Games 2023.
List of T20I World Records broken by Nepal vs Mongolia match in Asian Games Men T20I
1. Highest ever T20I total - 314/3 :
Nepal had a steady start, and they were 42/1 in 4.5 overs, but then they were unstoppable. Three incredible innings were played in the middle by Kushal Malla, Dipendra Singh Airee, and skipper Rohit Paudel. As a result, Nepal finished with a total of 314/3 in 20 overs. This was the first time in almost 20 years of T20I history that a team crossed the 300-runs mark in an innings. They broke Afghanistan's record of 278/3 vs Ireland.
2. Fastest T20I century (Kushal Malla - 34 balls) :
David Miller and Rohit Sharma smashed a 35-balls century each in T20I, which was the record for fastest T20I ton. But that record was also broken today. Nepal batter Kushal Malla took just 34 balls to complete his ton against Mongolia. He remained unbeaten on 137 off 50 balls, including 8 fours and 12 sixes, for a strike rate of 274. This is now a new world record for the fastest century in T20 internationals.
3. Fastest T20I fifty (Dipendra Singh-Airee - 9 balls) :
When Yuvraj Singh smashed a 12-ball fifty against England in the 2007 T20 World Cup, not many thought that it could be broken. But Dipendra Singh Airee had something else on his mind. He smashed the first six balls of his innings for sixes and became the first batter to do so. Then, he reached his half-century off just nine balls that had eight sixes and one double in them. He remained unbeaten on 52 of 10 balls, with eight sixes. Well, it looks impossible to break his record because even eight sixes will collect 48 runs for any batter.
4. Highest strike rate in an innings by a batsman in T20Is - Dipendra Singh Airee (510):
Dipendra Singh Airee not only scored the fastest fifty and became the first batter to start his innings with six sixes, but he also scored his 52 runs at an unbelievable strike rate of 520, which is the highest strike rate for any batter in a T20I innings (minimum 10 balls). This is another record that looks impossible to break now.
5. Biggest win by runs in T20Is - (273 runs) :
Not just with the bat, Nepal also had an excellent bowling performance. It was impossible for Mongolia to chase 315 runs to win, but their batters couldn't cross the 50-runs mark as a team. The whole team got all out for just 41 runs in 13.1 overs, and surprisingly, 23 runs of those came in extra. Ten batters only scored 17 runs from the bat. As a result, Nepal won the game by a massive 273 runs, registering the biggest T20I win in history, surpassing the 257-runs win of the Czech Republic against Turkey in 2019.
6. Most sixes hit in T20I innings (26 sixes) :
It was a stunning performance from Nepal with the ball, and there were fireworks all around. They registered the highest T20I total, which also saw a total of 26 sixes getting hit by Nepal batters, which is now the new record for most sixes in a T20I innings. They went past Afghanistan's record of 22 sixes in an innings against Ireland in 2019 in Dehradun.
7. Highest Proportion runs in Extra (56 percent) :
Not just with the bat, Nepal were too good to handle for Mongolia with the ball as well. The whole Mongolian team got all out for just 41 runs in 13.1 overs. Only one batter scored in double digits, and that was Davaasuren Jamyansuren (10 runs). Apart from him, none of the other batters even scored five runs. But the highest runs for Mongolia came in extra (23 runs), which is 56 percent of their total score. It is the highest proportion of runs scored in extras by a team.
8. First official century in Asian Games (Kushal Malla's 137 not out) :
Kushal Malla's 137 not out is the first ever century registered in Asian Games history. He became the first player to score a hundred in Asian Games. Though earlier in the 2010 edition, Pakistan's captain Khalid Latif scored 103 not out against China in Guangzhou, that game didn't have a T20I or T20 status. Hence, Malla's hundred is officially the first hundred at Asian Games.
9. Second-youngest batter to score T20I ton (Kushal Malla - 19y 206d) :
This was the maiden T20I ton for Kushanl Malla in his career, which came in just 14 innings. He is currently 19 years and 206 days old, and as per stats, he became the second-youngest batter to score a T20I ton. The youngest batter is from France, and he is Gustav Mckeon, who scored a T20I century at the age of 18 years and 282 days against Norway.
