Tamim Iqbal announced his retirement from international cricket in January 2025.

An unfortunate incident occurred during the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match between Mohammedan Sporting Club and Shinepukur Cricket Club in Savar, as former Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal suffered a heart attack.

After experiencing chest discomfort, Tamim left the field and went to the KPJ Specialised Hospital and Nursing Home to consult doctors. Post consultation, he returned to the ground to take an air ambulance to another hospital, but was unable to do so due to further complications.

The 36-year-old was then rushed back to the original hospital in critical condition, where tests confirmed a blockage in his arteries.

Speaking to reporters, Montu Dutta, the BKSP chief cricket coach, said that Tamim was healthy during the toss and left the field in his own car after feeling discomfort.

He said, “He was in good spirits during the toss. When he felt sick, he left the field and took his own car to the hospital. The doctors there did not want to let him leave at the time, but Tamim left anyway and was arranging an air ambulance himself.

The doctors later confirmed in a medical bulletin that the veteran Bangladesh batsman suffered a heart attack. They stated that they performed angioplasty to remove the blockage and that the procedure went smoothly.

The medical bulletin read, “He returned to us in a critical condition. We can call it a heart attack, and we subsequently did an angiogram and angioplasty to remove the blockage.

The medical procedure has gone smoothly. He is currently under observation. The swift coordination between the medical staff at BKSP and the hospital ensured Tamim was treated quickly.

Earlier in January, Tamim announced his retirement from international cricket after representing Bangladesh in over 350 matches.
