Dwayne Bravo played for three franchises in the IPL before joining KKR as their mentor.

Legendary all-rounder Dwayne Bravo retired from professional cricket in September 2024. A two-time ICC T20 World Cup winner, Bravo bid adieu to international cricket in 2021 and retired from the Indian Premier League (IPL) after the 2022 season.

In an 18-year career, Bravo won titles in IPL, PSL, CPL and Big Bash, and finished as the leading T20 wicket-taker in the world.

Bravo had an immensely successful IPL career. He is the only overseas bowler to win the Purple Cap twice – in 2013 and 2015 for Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

The West Indies all-rounder made his IPL debut in the inaugural season in 2008. He played in the league until 2022, featuring for three different teams, before taking up the role of a bowling coach and then a mentor. He played 161 IPL matches and took 183 wickets at an economy rate of 8.38. With the bat, he scored 1560 runs with five half-centuries.

He is one of the few players to have won the IPL title both as a player and coach. In this blog, we will talk about the teams he has been associated with in the IPL.

Dwayne Bravo spent the majority of his IPL career with Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He won the IPL title both as a player and coach with CSK.

He had two stints with CSK: from 2011 to 2015 and from 2018 to 2022 as CSK were suspended for a couple of seasons (2016 and 2017). He won three IPL titles with CSK (2011, 2018, 2021) as a player.

After taking retirement from the IPL, Bravo joined the franchise as a bowling coach for the 2023 and 2024 editions and won the title in his first season in the new role. Bravo played 130 IPL matches for CSK and took 154 wickets.

2. Mumbai Indians (Player)

Dwayne Bravo was signed by Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2008 auction for INR 60.2 lakhs. He played three seasons for MI until 2010. After that, he was released by the franchise, and he joined CSK.

In three seasons with MI, he played 33 games, taking 30 wickets at an economy rate of 8.16 and scoring 508 runs.

3. Gujarat Lions (Player)

When CSK were suspended for two seasons, Bravo was roped in by Gujarat Lions for INR 4 crores. In the IPL 2016 season, Bravo played 15 matches for the Lions, in which he took 17 wickets and scored 99 runs with the bat. He missed the 2017 season due to an injury.

4. Kolkata Knight Riders (Mentor)

Bravo parted ways with CSK and ended a long-term association with the franchise. He has now joined the IPL 2024 champions Kolkata Knight Riders as their new mentor ahead of the IPL 2025 season.

Bravo replaced Gambhir in the mentor role. Gambhir was KKR’s mentor in their title-winning IPL 2024 season, but left the franchise to become India’s head coach.
