List: Instances of teams scoring 1000+ runs in a match in test cricket

There have been only six instances of teams scoring 1000+ runs in a test cricket match.

Test cricket is the oldest and longest format of the game. A test match examines a player’s skills, patience, commitment, and mental strength over a period of five days. The first-ever test cricket match was played between Australia and England long back in 1877. Over the years, the longest format of the game has evolved into a symbol of tradition and sporting excellence.

Since a test match consists of unlimited overs, many teams often post gigantic totals while batting. If we look at the highest innings totals in test cricket, 800 has been breached four times and 900 has been breached on only two occasions, but no team has managed to go past 1000-run mark in an innings in test cricket.

On rare occasions, some teams gave incredible batting performances in both innings of a test cricket match and piled up more than 1000 runs in a single game. Over the years, only five teams have achieved the record of scoring 1000+ runs in a test match in both innings combined and only one team has achieved it twice.

On that note, below is the list of instances of teams scoring 1000+ runs in a test cricket match.

Instances of teams scoring 1000+ runs in a match in test cricket

1. England – 1121 runs vs West Indies, 1930, Kingston

During fourth test of England’s tour of the West Indies in 1930, England piled up 1121 runs across both innings, which is still the highest aggregate by a team in a test match. In the first innings, Andy Sandham slammed a triple century to power England to 849/10. Later, they bowled out the West Indies for 286 runs.

In the second innings, they declared their innings at 272/9, setting a mammoth 836-run target for the West Indies. The match ended in a draw with West Indies scoring 408/5 in the second innings.

2. Australia – 1028 runs vs England, 1934, The Oval

Australia mustered 1028 runs across both innings in a test match against England at The Oval in 1934. In the first innings, Bill Ponsford (266) and Donald Bradman (244) hammered double centuries for Australia, taking the team’s total to 701 all out.

Later, they bowled out England for 321 runs. In the second innings, Australia scored 327 before getting all out, setting a huge target of 708 runs for the hosts. After bowling out England for just 145 runs, Australia won the match by a huge margin of 562 runs.

3. South Africa – 1011 runs vs England, 1939, Durban

South Africa is another team to register 1000+ runs in a test match. The Proteas piled up 1011 runs in a match against England in 1939 at Kingsmead, Durban. With centuries by Pieter van der Bijl (125) and Dudley Nourse (103), South Africa posted 530/10 in the first innings.

They bundled out England for 316 runs in the first innings. Later, skipper Alan Melville’s ton (103) powered South Africa’s total to 481/10 in the second innings. England had a big target of 696 runs, however, the match ended in a draw, with England finishing at 654/5 in the second innings.

4. Australia – 1013 runs vs West Indies, 1969, Sydney

During a home game against the West Indies in Sydney in 1969, Australia piled up 1013 runs across both innings to record 1000+ runs in a test match for the second time. In the first innings, the hosts put up 619/10 on the scoreboard with a hundred by captain Bill Lawry (151) and a double ton by Doug Walters (242).

They then bowled out the West Indies for just 279 runs in the first innings. Later, they mustered 394/8 before declaration in the second innings, with centuries by Ian Redpath (132) and Doug Walters (103). The West Indies looked helpless during the 735-run chase and lost the match by 382 runs.

5. Pakistan – 1078 runs vs India, 2006, Faisalabad

The first instance of a team scoring over 1000 runs in a match in the 21st century came by Pakistan against India when they showed amazing batting performance against India in 2006 and scored 1078 runs across both innings. In the first innings, Pakistan scored 588/10, with centuries by Inzamam-ul-Haq (119) and Shahid Afridi (156).

India then scored 603/10 in the first innings with centuries by captain Rahul Dravid (103) and MS Dhoni (148). Younis Khan (194) and Mohammad Yousuf (126) hammered tons for the hosts to score 490/8 before declaring the innings. With India needing 476 runs to win and not many overs left in the game, it resulted in a dull draw.
