Top 10 teams with most wins in T20 World Cup history ft. India

An Asian team has won the most matches in the history of the T20 World Cup.
Winning at the biggest stage of the most exciting format in the world demands composure and excellent mentality. What makes the T20 World Cup challenging is the nature of this tournament; so far, many great teams have faltered against lower-ranked teams.
Therefore, consistency is crucial, as without it, it is difficult to win matches in this competition. Today, we look at the top 10 teams with the most match wins in the T20 World Cup history.
Teams with the most wins in the T20 World Cup-
10. Bangladesh – 12 wins

Bangladesh are placed last in this list and have won 12 games in the tournament’s history. Having not played any semi-finals yet, the team has yet to showcase their full potential despite playing all season.
The fact that their best performance so far was in 2024, when they finished seventh, is indicative of their limited success in the event. Following Bangladesh’s refusal to travel to India for the T20 World Cup 2026, the International Cricket Council (ICC) replaced them with Scotland just days before the campaign.
9. Afghanistan – 14 wins

Afghanistan have 14 victories after their stint in the 2026 edition, where they suffered a first-round exit. They have emerged as a giant-killer in the tournament over the years thanks to their spin heroes such as Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
Having been inducted as a full member in 2017, their biggest breakthrough came in 2024, when they reached the semis, beating Australia along the way.
8. New Zealand – 28 wins

New Zealand are yet to win a trophy in this event, despite reaching three semi-finals and one final. They have always been a steady and consistent team, boasting a stable batting order and an incredible bowling lineup, led by Trent Boult and Tim Southee during their prime years.
The Kiwis’ best performance came in the 2021 edition, when they reached the final but somehow finished runner-up.
7. West Indies – 28 wins

West Indies are among only three teams who have won the T20 World Cup twice in history. The Caribbean team has always been one of the most dangerous sides in this format, capable of taking down anyone on their day.
Apart from their two titles, they have reached two semi-finals but have also been eliminated from the group stage twice, which shows their inconsistency.
6. England – 32 wins

England lifted their maiden trophy in 2010 under Paul Collingwood’s captaincy and have been unstoppable at the competition since 2016. They suffered a heartbreaking loss to the West Indies in the 2016 final, but won again in 2022 under Jos Buttler’s leadership, alongside reaching the final four in 2021 and 2024.
5. Australia – 32 wins

Australia‘s performance in the T20 World Cup has been very poor by their standards. Under Ricky Ponting, they reached the semi-finals in the inaugural season, but slumped to a group stage loss in the next cycle.
After finishing as runner-ups in 2010, they finally enjoyed their crowning moment in 2021 under the leadership of Aaron Finch.
They outplayed New Zealand in a one-sided affair to win their first-ever title in the tournament. However, they have failed to reach the semi-finals since lifting the trophy in the 2021 edition.
4. Pakistan – 33 wins

Pakistan have never failed to deliver entertainment and drama in the T20 World Cup. They are known for their venomous bowling, and they found themselves at the centre of action in the competition’s initial few seasons. After falling short against arch-rivals India in a dramatic final, they redeemed themselves by winning in 2009.
Pakistan then reached consecutive semi-finals in 2010 and 2012, and reached the finals again in 2022. In 2024, they marked their worst campaign with a group-stage exit with defeats to India and the USA.
3. Sri Lanka – 35 wins

Sri Lanka are in the third position, with one of the most consistent records at the T20 World Cup. Their most memorable season came in 2014, when they beat India to win their maiden trophy.
Before winning the championship, they had finished as runners-up twice and qualified for the semis in 2010. Since 2014, though, the Lankans have struggled and have been unable to reach the final four.
2. South Africa – 36 wins

South Africa are the team with the most victories without a title in the tournament’s history. Despite their strong squad, the Proteas have always failed to clinch a trophy.
They came the closest to winning it all in 2024, when they collapsed from a seemingly winnable position against India. They have also reached two semi-finals and never suffered a group-stage exit.
1. India – 39 wins

India created history in the inaugural edition in 2007 by winning the first title, and then won their second title in 2024. As a result, they accumulated 11 wins from these two seasons. They also finished as finalists in 2014 before losing to Sri Lanka in Dhaka.
They have been a part of every edition of the T20 World Cup so far and have been the most successful in terms of overall wins.
