IPL 2025: BCCI introduces new rules for temporary replacement players

BCCI suspended IPL 2025 on May 9.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) suspended the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on May 9 due to the border disputes between India and Pakistan. However, BCCI is set to restart IPL 2025 on May 17 with a revised schedule.
Ahead of the IPL 2025 resumption, the BCCI has informed all IPL franchises about a key rule for replaced players. After IPL 2025 was suspended on May 9, foreign players from many teams flew back home due to safety reasons. Some players also took a transit halt in some other countries. Many of them are set to return to India to play for their franchises.
However, some foreign players will not return to the tournament due to personal reasons or national duties. As a result, some franchises are looking for temporary replacements for these players. For instance, Delhi Capitals (DC) have replaced Jake Fraser-McGurk with Mustafizur Rahman for the rest of the season.
Replacement players not eligible for retention next season
On Wednesday, May 14, the BCCI through an official email, informed the IPL franchises about an important rule for replacement players. BCCI said that replacement players who join the team after the IPL 2025 suspension will not be eligible for retention next season.
Only players who came in as replacements before IPL 2025 was suspended can be considered for retention in the next season. The players who come in through replacement after the suspension will have to be part of the auction in the next season.
“Due to non-availability of certain players due to national commitment or personal reasons, or injury or illness, Temporary Replacement Players will be allowed until the conclusion of this tournament,” BCCI told IPL franchise in an official mail.
“This decision is subject to the condition that the Temporary Replacement taken from this point forward will not be eligible for retention in the following year. Temporary Replacement Players will have to register for the IPL Player Auction 2026. The replacements that were approved or taken before the suspended period will be eligible for retention ahead of 2026 player auction,” the mail further added.
Notably, according to IPL rules, replacements are only allowed in any team till the 12th league match of the season. However, BCCI has allowed IPL teams to replace players this season, even after the 12th match, as the tournament was suspended for a week.
Meanwhile, IPL 2025 will commence on May 17 and witness the next 17 games. Six venues are scheduled to host the remaining games. No teams have fixed their playoffs’ berth so far. However, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are eliminated from the playoffs.
